Sudan STEPS Survey 2016: Tobacco Fact Sheet Summary
1 Background & Methodology
- WHO STEPS (Stepwise Approach to Surveillance) is a standardized method for collecting data on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and risk factors like tobacco use.
- The Sudan survey executed all three steps (Socio-demographics/behavior, Physical measurements, Biochemical tests) from Feb-Dec 2016, covering adults aged 18-69 years (n=8145 respondents overall).
- Sample weighed by gender and age. High response rates (95% for steps 1&2, 88% for step 3).
2. Key Findings (Tobacco Use)
- Overall Smoking Prevalence: 9.6% of adults smoked tobacco (17.1% men, 0.7% women).
- Smokeless Tobacco Use: 7.9% of adults used smokeless tobacco (14.3% men, 0.2% women).
- Combined Tobacco Use: 15.6% of adults used either smoked tobacco or smokeless tobacco.
3. Key Findings (Current Use Patterns)
- Daily smoking: 6.9% of adults (12.6% men, 0.3% women).
- Daily smokeless tobacco use: 6.7% of adults (12.3% men, 0.2% women).
- Age of initiation: Average age was 18.6 years for men, 16.1-22.9 years for women (19.3 years overall).
4. Key Findings (Quit Attempts & Advice)
- Quit attempts: 65.0-65.5% of smokers tried to quit in the past 12 months.
- Professional advice: 33.4-34.0% of smokers were advised to quit by health professionals in the past 12 months.
5. Key Findings (Secondhand Smoke Exposure)
- Home Exposure: 24.6% of adults (approx. 4.9 million) were exposed to secondhand smoke at home.
- Workplace Exposure (closed areas): 22.1% of adults (approx. 4.4 million) were exposed to secondhand smoke in closed workplace areas.
6. Key Findings (Health Warnings & Media)
- 71.7-71.8% of smokers thought about quitting because of package warning labels.
- 46.0-49.0% of adults noticed anti-tobacco messages on TV/radio in the last 30 days.
- 27.9-30.9% of adults noticed such messages in newspapers/magazines.
- Low awareness of cigarette marketing/ Promotions (6.7-10.0%).
7. Economic Aspect
- Average monthly expenditure on manufactured cigarettes was 280.6 SDG.
