Global School-based Student Health Survey in Lebanon (Private), 2011: Summary
The 2011 Lebanon (Private) Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) focused on health behaviors and risks among students aged 13-15 years in grades 7-9. The survey, using a two-stage cluster sampling method, had overall response rates exceeding expectations, with 1081 students participating.
Key findings across various domains are summarized below:
-
Alcohol Use: A significant portion of students consumed alcohol, with higher rates among boys. Approximately 38.4% of total students drank alcohol in the past 30 days, while early first use before age 14 was reported by 89.9%. Serious intoxication was also common among some students.
-
Dietary Behaviours: About a fifth of students were underweight or overweight, with obesity noted in over 6% of cases. High consumption of carbonated soft drinks was prevalent, impacting nearly half of the students.
-
Drug Use: Overall drug use was low, particularly marijuana, affecting 3.9% of students overall, with higher rates among boys and limited data on first use before age 14.
-
Hygiene: Unsatisfactory personal hygiene habits were common, with low rates of regular tooth cleaning and handwashing after using the toilet, indicating areas for improvement.
-
Mental Health: Mental health issues were notable, including high rates of suicidal ideation (14.2%) and attempts (12.3%), as well as some students reporting no close friends.
-
Physical Activity: Most students did not meet guidelines for daily physical activity, with lower rates of exercise compared to classroom-based PE classes, though sitting behaviors were widespread.
-
Protective Factors: Students often missed classes without permission, and parental understanding and monitoring varied, affecting school engagement for many.
-
Violence and Unintentional Injury: Physical fights and injuries were common, with high bullying rates among students, particularly boys, who were more involved in aggressive incidents.
This summary highlights the prevalence of health risks among Lebanese school students, with disparities by gender and age.
