Summary of GSHS Philippines 2011 (Mindanao) Fact Sheet
Overview
The 2011 Global School-based Student Health Survey in the Philippines (Mindanao) focused on health behaviors and risks for students aged 13-15 years, with a total sample of 1850 students. Data collection used a two-stage cluster sampling design, yielding a school response rate of 96%, student response rate of 83%, and overall response rate of 79%. Key areas surveyed included alcohol use, dietary behaviors, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, tobacco use, and violence/unintentional injury.
Key Findings
- Alcohol Use: A notable portion of students consumed alcohol; 14.6% of boys and 9.9% of girls reported drinking one or more drinks in the past 30 days. Among those who ever drank, 58.6% of boys and 48.1% of girls had their first drink before age 14.
- Dietary Behaviours: Issues with weight were common, with 14.1% of boys and 6.8% of girls underweight, and 11.2% of both boys and girls being overweight. Carbonated soft drink consumption was high in all groups (38.2% boys, 35.0% girls).
- Hygiene: Most students brushed teeth infrequently (4.2% boys did so daily) and rarely washed hands after using the toilet (4.9% boys).
- Mental Health: Suicidal ideation and attempts were prevalent, with 14.0% of boys and 18.0% of girls considering suicide in the past 12 months, and 13.4% of girls attempting it. One-third (3.0-5.5%) reported having no close friends.
- Physical Activity: Only a small percentage met activity guidelines, with 13.8% of boys active for at least 60 minutes daily. PE classes were attended by about 31.9-34.3%.
- Protective Factors: Many students missed classes (34.1% boys missed without permission), and parental support varied, with 22.5-27.0% reporting understanding or monitoring.
- Tobacco Use: Smoking was higher among boys, with 12.1% doing it on days in past 30 days, and 68.5% first trying before 14. Exposure to smoking was common, affecting 54.6% of boys.
- Violence and Unintentional Injury: Physical fights, injuries, and bullying were widespread: 36.5% boys fought, 44.8% suffered injuries, and 46.4% experienced bullying in the past month.
This summary highlights risks such as substance use, poor mental health, and violence, emphasizing needs for health interventions in adolescents.
