Summary of 2013 Swaziland Global School-based Student Health Survey
The 2013 Swaziland Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) was a comprehensive study targeting students in Forms 1-5 (ages 13-17 years) using a two-stage cluster sampling design to ensure representative data. Key findings include high response rates (school 100%, student 97%, total 97%) with 3680 participants.
Surveys covered dietary behaviors, drug use, hygiene, mental health, protective factors, sexual behaviors, and violence/unintentional injury. Sex-specific data are provided below.
Dietary Behaviors
- Underweight prevalence: Aged 13-15: 2.6-3.2%, Aged 16-17: 2.7-5.7%, Overall 2.7-5.5%.
- Overweight prevalence: Aged 13-15: 13.6-16.9%, Aged 16-17: 12.8-17.1%, Overall 13.5-18.3%.
- Obesity prevalence: Aged 13-15: 2.9-5.5%, Aged 16-17: 2.5-5.3%, Overall 3.0-4.9%.
- Carbonated soft drink consumption: ~43-46% drank daily, varying by age and sex.
Drug Use
- First drug use before age 14: 33.8-47.7% of ever-users.
- Marijuana life-time use: Aged 13-15: 2.5-4.2%, Aged 16-17: 6.0-8.0%, Overall 4.5-7.8%.
Hygiene
- Tooth cleaning < once daily: Aged 13-15: 3.5-7.2%, Aged 16-17: 3.3-5.4%, Overall 3.6-6.0%.
- Hand washing after toilet: Aged 13-15: 2.3-3.6%, Aged 16-17: 3.9-6.0%, Overall 3.3-4.6%.
Mental Health
- Suicide consideration in past 12 months: 14.5-19.3%, varying by age and sex.
- Suicide attempt: 12.1-19.8%.
- Having no close friends: 13.2-20.0%.
Protective Factors
- Unpermitted school absence: Aged 13-15: 7.3-17.0%, Aged 16-17: 13.3-19.6%, Overall 12.1-16.4%.
- Parental understanding: 40.7-53.5%.
- Parental knowledge of activities: 31.0-44.9%.
Sexual Behaviors
- Ever had intercourse: Aged 13-15: 12.0-17.2%, Aged 16-17: 22.6-31.5%, Overall 17.4-24.1%.
- Condom use on last act: Missed data in subgroup, 59.9-79.8% for those who had intercourse.
Violence and Unintentional Injury
- Physical fights in past 12 months: Aged 13-15: 17.0-22.1%, Aged 16-17: 15.4-21.6%, Overall 16.7-21.3%.
- Serious injuries: Aged 13-15: 33.9-41.7%, Aged 16-17: 34.3-45.1%, Overall 34.4-43.0%.
- Bullying in past 30 days: 29.4-37.6%, overall 29.0-36.1%.
