Epidemiological Situation (Week 9, 2023):

• A total of 299 suspected cases and 15 deaths (5.0% case fatality rate) were reported across 14 countries.
• Niger reported the highest burden (6.6% CFR), with one district crossing the epidemic threshold.
• Benin and Niger had districts above the alert threshold for meningitis.

Cumulative Situation (Weeks 1-9, 2023):

• 3,910 suspected cases and 207 deaths (5.3% CFR) were reported from 21 countries.
• Niger and Nigeria showed persistent transmission (572 and 345 cases, respectively).
• Laboratory testing confirmed pathogens primarily as Streptococcus pneumoniae (44.9%) and Neisseria meningitidis complex (44.4%).

Laboratory Data:

• 1,594 samples were tested; 887 were negative, 178 positive, and 529 were pending results.
• Key pathogens identified included Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Haemophilus influenzae.
• Countries are encouraged to improve laboratory capacity, including sample transportation and pathogen identification.

Key Recommendations and Actions:

• Strengthen case detection, data reporting, and laboratory surveillance to enhance outbreak response.
• Ensure timely sharing of weekly laboratory data with the WHO Inter-Country Support Team for West Africa (IST-WA).
• Silent countries (Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mauritania) are urged to submit 2023 data to IST-WA.
• Continue MenAfriVac introduction and catch-up campaigns in at-risk countries, with Guinea-Bissau planning its rollout by 2022.
