For Week 08 (21-27 February 2022), 18 countries reported data with a total of 465 suspected meningitis cases and 20 deaths, resulting in a case fatality rate (CFR) of approximately 4.3%.
Sixteen districts crossed the alert threshold in five countries: Ghana (1 district), Ethiopia (7 districts), Niger (2 districts), DR Congo (5 zones), and Chad (1 district).
No epidemic districts were reported, and data completeness ranged from 60.4% total to 100% for most countries.

From Week 01 to Week 08 (January-February 2022), cumulative cases reached 3621, with 155 deaths and a CFR of ~4.3%.
Recommendations include strengthening surveillance, particularly for districts with over 100,000 inhabitants, to detect outbreaks early.
All countries are urged to update 2021-2022 epidemic preparedness plans and document control measures from the previous season.

Nine countries shared laboratory data, identifying 181 pathogens, with 41 being Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn), accounting for 22.7% of cases.
Niger reported the highest rate of Non-meningococcal pathogens (NmC) at 66.9%.
Encouragement to enhance laboratory capacity, including Trans-Isolate requests and DHIS2 data management for meningitis cases.

By March 2022: Develop a communication plan for the Regional Strategic Plan to Defeat Meningitis by 2030.
By June 2022: Strengthen national sample transportation systems.
By July 2022: Establish a database for meningitis survivors.
By September 2022: Develop strategies for caring for meningitis survivors.
Ongoing actions: Improve meningitis surveillance, accelerate laboratory confirmation, integrate vaccination plans, and mobilize resources for prevention and response.
