Vanuatu GSHS 2016 Summary
Survey Methodology
- The 2016 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) was conducted in Vanuatu among students in grades 7-11 (typically aged 13-17) using a two-stage cluster sampling design.
- At the first stage, schools were selected based on enrollment size; at the second stage, classes were randomly chosen, and all students in selected classes were eligible to participate.
- School response rate was 91%, student response rate 63%, and overall response rate 57%. A total of 2,159 students participated.
- Students self-reported data via computer-scanable answer sheets, and the survey covered various health behaviors and factors.
Key Health Behaviors Measured
- Alcohol use, dietary behaviors, drug use, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviors, tobacco use, and violence/unintentional injury.
Main Findings
- High prevalence of tobacco use (20.8% current use among adolescents), with notable gender and age differences (e.g., higher among males).
- Significant mental health issues: 14.8% seriously considered suicide, and 22.4% attempted it over the 12 months.
- Other concerns included high rates of violence (40.2% experienced physical fights) and unintentional injuries (61.4% seriously injured).
- Protective factors and supportive parenting showed moderate levels, with room for improvement.
- For detailed data on specific behaviors (e.g., alcohol, diet), refer to the full fact sheet, noting variations by age and sex.
