The paper presents an approach to improving community-based adaptation to climate change using participatory gamification design. Given the increasing impacts of climate change in Chinese cities, such as infrastructure failures and high mortality rates, the study emphasizes the need for enhanced resident participation and preparedness. The methodology integrates participatory design to collect community experiences and refine instructional objectives, combined with an open-ended gamification framework to design a scalable and interactive game prototype.
A case study in Zhengzhou, which experienced a major flood in 2021, involved participatory workshops and digital collaboration. The game prototype was designed to increase resident awareness, motivation, and participation by incorporating elements like event cards and role-based interactions. Participants provided feedback, leading to iterations that improved fairness and immersion.
Findings indicate that gamification significantly boosts engagement and learning, supporting self-rescue behaviors and digital participation. The framework's advantages include adaptability, standardization, and support for iterative updates. However, limitations include insufficient participants in the case study, lacks full multi-stakeholder involvement, and constraints from the COVID-19 pandemic. Future research should explore broader implementations and refine rules for scalability.
