The TAG serves as WHO's advisory body on air pollution and health issues, providing technical guidance and analyses. Its main functions are:

To advise on methodologies and data for assessing population exposure to air pollutants (SDG 7.1.2 and 11.6.2)
To review epidemiological data for updating SDG 3.9.1 (mortality from air pollution)
To advise on source-specific disease burden methodologies
To support activities on desert dust impacts and reduction policies
To evaluate cost-effective interventions, policies and identify good practices/best-buys
To support assessment of health and economic implications of climate mitigation policies on air pollution
The TAG will operate in four sub-groups: health impact assessment, desert dust and health, interventions and policy, and climate co-benefits.

The TAG will have up to 20 internationally renowned experts per sub-group, serving in their personal capacities.
Key fields of expertise required include: epidemiology, air pollution exposure assessment, health impact assessment, air quality monitoring & modelling, atmospheric science, statistics, source apportionment, environmental policies, land-use modelling, GHG inventories, health co-benefits modelling, and health economics.
Membership selection prioritizes technical expertise, geographical representation, and gender balance.
Appointed by WHO Assistant Director General UHC/Division of Healthier Population. The Chair may be appointed separately with extended terms.
Members serve for 2-year renewable terms; Chair cannot serve more than one 2-year term as Chair.
Appointments subject to avoidance of conflicts of interest. Proposed members must complete a declaration of interest form. No remuneration is provided, but travel costs for in-person meetings are covered by WHO.

The TAG shall meet at least once annually (in-person or virtual). Quorum requires two-thirds of members.
Meetings may include open and closed sessions. Closed sessions contain recommendations formulation; open sessions are for general discussion, sometimes open to "Observers" (intergovernmental and NGO representatives in official relations with WHO). Observers do not participate in decision-making.
Decisions are typically reached by consensus; minority opinions recorded if not reached.
Members are expected to participate actively via meetings, teleconferences, and email.
All documentation is provided in English.
Meetings are conducted impartially.

WHO provides the secretariat, including support documents.
All TAG work considers information confidential and proprietary to WHO (or collaborating partners). Members sign confidentiality undertakings.
