Pakistan Flood Response Update (Issue #2, October 14, 2022)

Situation Overview

• Floods are receding in many areas, with around 50% of displaced people returning to their origin.
• Access to safe water and sanitation is limited; use of contaminated water leads to diarrheal diseases.
• Measles and rubella vaccination campaigns are underway in 6 Balochistan districts targeting 226,590 people, with planned campaigns in KPK.
• WHO representative is in Sukkur supporting response; Dr. Palitha Mahipala involved in immunization.

Public Health Concerns

• Stagnant water increases mosquito breeding, causing malaria outbreaks in 32 districts with over 539,534 cases reported.
• Dengue fever ongoing in Sindh; cholera and AWD cases sporadic but present.
• Malnutrition rates (GAM and SAM) exceed emergency levels in flood-affected Sindh and Balochistan districts.

WHO Response

• Established 3 operational hubs and 10 Emergency Operation Centres in affected districts.
• Supported government for MR campaigns; preliminary coverage is 83%.
• Partnering with UNICEF and Global Fund to distribute supplies for malaria control.
• Deployed Emergency Surveillance System for disease outbreaks.
• Hosted donor briefing and conducted health camps in over 5000 locations.
• Provided US$ 0.8 million in medical supplies and installed 2 water filtration plants.
• US$ 17.99 million raised out of required US$ 81.5 million; funding gap is US$ 63.51 million.
