At the end of 2021, global renewable generation capacity reached 3,064 GW, representing a 9.1% increase compared to the previous year. The net increase was 257 GW, with solar and wind energy accounting for 88% of all new renewable capacity added. Asia was the largest contributor to new capacity, adding 60% of the global total, or 154.7 GW, bringing its total capacity to 1,456 GW (48% of the global total). Highlights by Technology
- Hydropower: Expanded by 19 GW (+2%), with China adding 14.6 GW and Canada adding 1.3 GW.
- Solar Energy: Grew by 76 GW in 2021, with China (+53 GW), India (+10.3 GW), Japan (+4.4 GW), and Republic of Korea (+3.6 GW) leading the expansion. The U.S. added 19.6 GW, and Brazil, Germany, Netherlands, and Spain added over 5 GW each.
- Wind Energy: Increased by 93 GW (+13%), with China (+46.9 GW) and U.S. (+14 GW) as the top contributors. Offshore wind accounted for 7% of total wind capacity.
