Kyrgyz Republic Landslide Analysis
The Kyrgyz Republic faces significant landslide risks due to its geography, rainfall patterns, and seismic activity. This atlas highlights that between 1991 and 2022, there were 593 landslide events causing 275 fatalities and threatening over 30,000 people through 4,554 identified slopes, with 1,186 being active. The impacts are severe on key sectors, particularly transport and hydropower, with economic losses reaching millions of dollars, and marginalized groups facing disproportionate risks from climate change.

Key government initiatives focus on disaster risk management through the State System for Civil Protection, including monitoring, early warning, and resettlement programs. Collaboration with development partners and academic institutions has advanced research and technology, such as satellite monitoring and nature-based solutions. However, challenges remain in community awareness and sustainable financing.

The Ayusai case study demonstrates the need for integrated approaches, combining physical measures like slope unloading with nonstructural actions, community involvement, and gender-sensitive strategies. Ongoing ADB-supported projects aim to enhance monitoring systems and build long-term resilience through comprehensive risk reduction efforts.

Priority areas include strengthening institutional capacities, expanding early warning systems, and promoting community-based solutions to mitigate future risks.
