Influenza at the Human-Animal Interface: Summary Assessment (as of 6 January 2015)
Avian Influenza A(H5N1)
From January 2003 to 6 January 2015, 694 laboratory-confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1) were reported globally, with 402 fatalities. No significant genetic changes were detected in viruses. In Egypt, since the December 2014 update, 18 new cases were reported (including four deaths), many linked to poultry exposure, with a cluster in Giza involving untested individuals. The increase in cases is attributed to factors like poultry outbreaks, regional awareness gaps, and seasonal conditions. Risk for community spread remains low due to limited human-to-human transmission.
Avian Influenza A(H5N6)
China reported one confirmed human case caused by influenza A(H5N6) virus in Guangdong province; the individual was in critical condition with a history of poultry exposure. No secondary cases were noted. This is the second human case detected with this virus, with no major genetic changes observed. Further sporadic cases or small clusters are possible; ongoing monitoring is needed.
Human Infections with Other Viruses
Avian influenza A(H7N9) is actively monitored by WHO, with separate risk assessments available. WHO urges continuous surveillance and reporting of non-seasonal influenza viruses in humans and animals to detect potential public health risks. The focus is on influenza viruses evolving in animals and humans, emphasizing global monitoring and laboratory characterization. Outbreaks in birds of other subtypes, like H5N8, are tracked, but no human cases have been reported.
