2003 Venezuela (Barinas) GSHS Fact Sheet Summary

Overview

This report summarizes data from the 2003 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) conducted in Barinas, Venezuela, focusing on health behaviors of students aged 13-15 years. The survey assessed alcohol and drug use, sexual behaviors related to HIV and STIs, hygiene, dietary habits, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, unintentional injuries, violence, and school engagement.

Methodology

The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with probability proportional to enrollment size. A school response rate of 96% and student response rate of 88% were recorded, with an overall response rate of 85%. A total of 2,166 students from grades 7, 8, and 9 participated. Data were collected via computer-scannable answer sheets with students self-reporting.

Key Findings

Findings are based on students aged 13-15 years and are presented below:

Alcohol and Drug Use: High rates of alcohol consumption (34.9%) and intoxication (20.0%) were reported, with higher prevalence among boys. Drug use was low (3.1%).
Dietary Behaviours and Overweight: Some students reported hunger due to insufficient food at home (4.4%). The majority did not maintain regular dietary habits.
Hygiene: Poor handwashing practices were common, with low rates of handwashing before and after using the toilet.
Mental Health: Significant issues included feelings of loneliness (8.7%), suicidal ideation (10.6% seriously considered suicide), and lack of close friends (8.6%).
Physical Activity: Low levels of physical activity were observed, with only 8.1% meeting guidelines, while 20.4% spent excessive time on sedentary activities.
Sexual Behaviours: A portion of students (19.9%) had engaged in sexual intercourse; condom use at last intercourse was common but slightly lower for girls. Higher incidence of multiple partners and violence noted.
Protective Factors: Prohibited school absence was reported by 19.2%. Parental awareness of free-time activities was low (35.7%).
Unintentional Injuries and Violence: High rates of physical fights (31.1%), injuries (7.6%), and bullying (34.5%) were recorded.
