The 2003 Zimbabwe Bulawayo Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) aimed to assess health-related behaviors among 13-15-year-old students, focusing on areas such as alcohol and drug use, sexual behaviors, unintentional injuries, hygiene, physical activity, tobacco use, mental health, and protective factors. Using a two-stage cluster sampling design, the survey included students from forms 1, 2, and 3, with a total of 1,804 participants. The school response rate was 100%, and the student response rate was 84%.

Key findings are summarized below, divided into main categories:

Alcohol and Drug Use: 20.0% of students reported drinking alcohol, with higher rates among boys (23.2%) than girls (17.7%). About 19.0% had been drunk at least once, and 10.4% had used drugs at least once, with boys having higher rates.
Hygiene: Handwashing behaviors were low, with 3.2% never or rarely washing hands before eating and 3.6% doing so after using the toilet.
Mental Health: 16.3% reported feeling lonely often or always, 22.9% considered suicide, and 11.6% had no close friends.
Physical Activity: Only 12.8% met guidelines for physical activity, while 42.3% spent most of their day on sedentary activities.
Protective Factors: 29.4% missed school without permission, and student perceptions of school kindness and parental knowledge were lower among some groups.
Sexual Behaviors: 11.7% reported ever having sexual intercourse, with higher rates for multiple partners among boys (7.0%) compared to girls (2.7%).
Tobacco Use: 8.3% smoked cigarettes, and 9.6% used other tobacco products at least once in the past 30 days.
Unintentional Injuries and Violence: Injuries were common, with 38.8% involved in physical fights, 58.9% seriously injured, and 59.9% bullied in the past 30 days.
