The Upper Austria government's plan, initially presented as part of an ecological transition, received misleading agreements from Brussels and support from the ecological grassroots movement.
Forces driving the project: more than three million cubic meters of earth; five mine shafts; two huge waste treatment plants; thousands of vehicles; the impossibility of reversing the project once started.
The project's impact: significant CO2 emissions (about seven to eight million metric tons); water pollution (from mining chemicals); landscape, soils, and agriculture devastation; expulsion of residents.
Soil pollution: extraction implies digging up soils from up to fifty meters deep, spreading contaminated soil, and dehydrating. No adequate remediation measures.
Social conflicts: historical community engagement has declined, internal tensions rose, and division emerged between project supporters and opponents.
The project is a key extractivist infrastructure for battery metals, following construction of new mines by Austrian companies, threatening social cohesion and community heritage.
Middle class values of comfort and democracy contrast with the environmental and intergenerational injustice.
Considering the scale of destruction and the project's irreversible nature, there is little hope for securing the future while such projects continue.
It's a wake-up call demanding full civic consciousness and direct action to stop mines and the destruction of common wealth.
