Summary of Global School-based Student Health Survey, Uruguay 2012 Fact Sheet
The 2012 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Uruguay examined health behaviors among 13-15-year-old students in grades 2CB, 3CB, and 1BD. Using a two-stage cluster sampling design with a 77% student response rate, data from 3524 participants was analyzed. Key areas covered include alcohol use, dietary behaviors, drug use, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviors, tobacco use, and violence/unintentional injury.
Major findings for students aged 13-15:
- Alcohol use: 45.2% consumed alcohol on one or more days in the past 30 days, with girls having the lowest rate.
- Dietary behaviors: 27.2% were classified as overweight, and 7% as obese; 69.4% drank carbonated soft drinks daily.
- Drug use: 8.6% reported lifetime marijuana use.
- Hygiene: Low rates of regular tooth cleaning (average <1 time/day) and handwashing after using the toilet.
- Mental health: 11.4% seriously considered suicide, and 9.2% attempted it; 4.7% reported no close friends.
- Physical activity: Only 28.8% met daily physical activity guidelines, regardless of gender.
- Sexual behaviors: 27.7% had intercourse by age 13-15, with condom use at last encounter for 84.1% of those who had sex.
- Tobacco use: 10.5% smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days.
- Violence: 25.9% reported physical fights, and 33.1% were seriously injured in the past year; bullying affected 19.1%.
- Protective factors and absence: 22.7% missed classes without permission, while parental understanding and supervision were common.
This survey provides a comprehensive snapshot of youth health behaviors in Uruguay, highlighting areas for intervention.
