Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH) Summit Analysis Summary

The World Health Organization (WHO) Subprogramme on Reproductive Health (HRP) is convening the first WHO PPH Summit to address the global crisis of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), a leading cause of maternal mortality. Each year, approximately 14 million women experience PPH, resulting in about 70,000 maternal deaths worldwide, with survivors often facing lifelong reproductive disability due to urgent surgical interventions.

Despite ambitious targets to end preventable maternal deaths by 2030 under SDG-3, few countries are on track. Over the past decade, limited progress has been made in PPH care, from identifying innovations to implementing proven interventions. Challenges include the lack of cohesive coordination at global and country levels, inadequate end-to-end thinking in product development, limited research guiding policy decisions, and insufficient focus on translating research to clinical impact.

The summit, held in Dubai from March 7-10, 2023, will bring together diverse stakeholders, including academic researchers, guideline experts, industry professionals, policymakers, funders, NGOs, and country health ministry representatives. A key goal is to review and prioritize urgent PPH priorities to accelerate progress on SDG 3.1 (reducing maternal mortality).

Main outputs include a consensus-based roadmap and call-to-action, covering research from discovery science to post-marketing surveillance, as well as global and country-level normative, implementation, and advocacy agendas focused on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The summit aims to catalyse alignment among experts, promote collaborations, and launch a focused initiative to alleviate PPH suffering and move toward the 2030 target, aligning with WHO's thirteenth General Programme of Work (GPW-13).

Participating organizations and funders include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, MSD for Mothers, and HRP, with logistical support from ATOP and evidence input from partners like Centro Rosarino de Estudios Perinatales and the Concept Foundation.

Overall, the summit seeks to improve PPH care quality through strategic planning, implementation priorities, and advocacy, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to address PPH challenges globally.
