Overview

The Lithuania GYTS (Global Youth Tobacco Survey) in 2001 was a school-based survey assessing tobacco use among students aged 13-15. It employed a two-stage cluster sampling design with a response rate of 82.4%, involving 1,752 eligible students. Data covers prevalence, determinants, knowledge, attitudes, cessation intentions, media exposure, and school-based tobacco education.

Prevalence

• 83.0% were exposed to anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days; 72.6% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards, and similar exposure occurred in newspapers/magazines.
• 25.8% own an object with a cigarette brand logo; few were offered free cigarettes by tobacco companies.

School Components

• 37.0% learned about smoking dangers in school during the past year; 33.2% learned about the effects of tobacco use; discussions on age-specific smoking reasons were reported.
