报告摘要
Meningitis Weekly Bulletin Summary - Week 16, 2015
Epidemiological Data
As of week 16 in the 2015 epidemic season, 7,874 suspected meningitis cases were reported across multiple countries in West Africa, with 677 deaths resulting in a case fatality rate of 8.6%. Countries showing high case numbers include Niger, Burkina Faso, and Ghana. For the week alone (week 16), total cases were 602 with 68 deaths, maintaining a high lethality rate. A focus on epidemic districts includes Niger, where three districts in Niamey were in epidemic phase and one was in alert. Vaccination status is indicated, with partial (P) or full (T) MenAfriVac coverage, and reactivity campaigns were ongoing.
Key Statistics
Cumulative data from weeks 01 to 16 show that meningitis activity was prevalent in many nations, with Niger and Nigeria reporting ongoing issues before week 16. The Democratic Republic of the Congo's cases were noted outside the high-risk meningitis belt, so thresholds weren't applicable.
Laboratory Findings
Laboratory analysis from specified weeks identified Neisseria meningitidis serogroups C and pneumococcus as dominant pathogens. For instance, Guinea reported 13 isolates of NmC, with no introduction of MenAfriVac yet. Total lab samples collected were 1,851 out of suspected cases, consistent with ongoing surveillance.
District and Alert Information
- No epidemic districts were active in many countries during week 16, but a few like Mali and Niger showed alerts or active outbreaks.
- Completeness of data varied, with some countries reporting full completeness for reporting weeks.
Comments
Weekly monitoring confirmed high transmission rates, fueled by low vaccination coverage in partially vaccinated countries. Surveillance efforts were maintained, and the analysis may change with further data verification.
