Introduction

This is the final weekly update; future reports will be published quarterly. Data from the Region of the Americas is included up to 6 August 2023, and comparisons for it use respiratory data. Testing and reporting reductions limit data accuracy.

Global Overview

New cases increased by 38%, deaths decreased by 50% in the last 28 days (31 July–27 August 2023), with 1.4 million cases and 1,800 deaths.
Cumulative global cases: ~770 million; deaths: ~6.9 million.
Cases rose in the European, Western Pacific, and Eastern Mediterranean regions; deaths fell in Africa and South-East Asia.
High case burdens persist in some countries, but indicators like hospitalizations are more reliable due to reduced testing.
SARS-CoV-2 PCR positivity average: ~10%.

Hospitalizations and ICU Admissions

Hospitalizations (40% increase), ICU admissions (33% decrease) in the last 28 days.
Regional disparities noted, e.g., increases in Ireland, US; decreases in Australia.
Data preliminary and subject to reporting delays.

SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Interest and Variants Under Monitoring

Tracking variants: VOIs (XBB.1.5, XBB.1.16, EG.5), VUMs (BA.2.75, etc.).
EG.5 is now most prevalent (26.1%).
Sequence sharing decreased; BA.2.86 is a new VUM with limited data.
No deaths reported for BA.2.86; WHO urges enhanced surveillance.

Vaccine Effectiveness Against Omicron and Descendants

mRNA bivalent vaccines show better protection against symptomatic and severe disease than monovalent or unvaccinated status.
No direct comparisons for severe disease outcomes due to timing conflicts.
Neutralizing antibodies: Lower effectiveness for newer subvariants, improved with bivalent boosters.

WHO Regional Overviews

Americas: Cases down 31%, SARI deaths down 80%. Transition to integrated surveillance noted.
Africa: Cases and deaths down 76%–73%.
Eastern Mediterranean: Cases up 113%, deaths up 33%.
