Summary of the COVID-19 Weekly Epidemiological Update (Edition 108, 7 September 2022)

Global Overview

As of 4 September 2022, the global number of new weekly cases decreased by 12% compared to the previous week, with 4.2 million new cases reported. The global number of new weekly deaths also decreased by 5%, with over 13,700 deaths recorded. Cumulatively, over 600 million confirmed cases and over 6.4 million deaths have been reported worldwide.

At the regional level, all six WHO regions reported a decline in new weekly cases:

Eastern Mediterranean: -29%
South-East Asia: -22%
Europe: -15%
Africa: -10%
Western Pacific: -10%
Americas: -9%

However, new weekly deaths increased in three regions:

Africa: +14%
Americas: +6%
Western Pacific: +5%

The decline in cases is attributed to changing testing strategies in several countries, leading to fewer tests and lower case detection. This trend should be interpreted with caution due to potential underreporting and delays in data submission.

Special Focus: SARS-CoV-2 Variants

Geographic Spread and Prevalence of VOCs

From 5 August to 5 September 2022, 118,028 SARS-CoV-2 sequences were shared through GISAID, with 99.4% being the Omicron variant (VOC). The BA.5 Omicron descendant lineages remained dominant, increasing in prevalence from 84.8% to 86.8% over the two weeks. The prevalence of BA.4 and its descendants dropped from 6.8% to 4.2%, while BA.2 descendant lineages (BA.2.X) remained stable at 2.5–2.6%.

BA.2.75, an Omicron descendant under monitoring, showed low global prevalence (0.9% in week 33 and 1.2% in week 34), but some countries have reported increasing trends. WHO continues to monitor all lineages for changes in prevalence and viral characteristics, noting that surveillance limitations affect the accuracy of these trends, including:

Variability in sequencing capacity
Differences in sampling strategies
Reductions in testing and sequencing
Delays in uploading data to GISAID

WHO Regional Overviews

African Region

New weekly cases: 11,000, a 10% decrease from the previous week.
Countries with ≥20% increase in new cases: 8 out of 54 (16%), including Mali (+376%), Chad (+42%), and Côte d'Ivoire (+22%).
Highest new cases: Réunion (7014), South Africa (1275), Nigeria (460).
New weekly deaths: 50, a 14% increase from the previous week.
Highest new deaths: South Africa (+33%), Réunion (+117%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-20%).

Region of the Americas

New weekly cases: 821,450, a 9% decrease from the previous week.
Countries with ≥20% increase in new cases: 4 out of 56 (7%), including Sint Eustatius (+88%), United States Virgin Islands (+46%), and Mexico (+28%).
Highest new cases: USA (586,509), Brazil (87,236), Chile (40,080).
New weekly deaths: 5,645, a 6% increase from the previous week.
Highest new deaths: USA (+26%), Brazil (-17%), Canada (-1%).

Eastern Mediterranean Region

New weekly cases: 33,697, a 29% decrease from the previous week.
No countries reported ≥20% increase in new cases.
Highest new cases: Iran (11,351), Jordan (3,946), Qatar (3,944).
New weekly deaths: 357, a 12% decrease from the previous week.
Highest new deaths: Iran (+1%), Lebanon (-15%), Pakistan (-19%).

European Region

New weekly cases: 1,092,799, a 15% decrease from the previous week.
Countries with ≥20% increase in new cases: 2 out of 53 (3%), including Gibraltar (+33%) and Ukraine (+26%).
Highest new cases: Russia (323,500), Germany (183,715), Italy (136,211).
New weekly deaths: 3,355, a 22% decrease from the previous week.
Highest new deaths: Russia (+20%), Italy (-23%), Spain (+7%).

South-East Asia Region

New weekly cases: 90,523, a 22% decrease from the previous week.
Country with ≥20% increase in new cases: Myanmar (+94%).
Highest new cases: India (48,403), Indonesia (26,238), Thailand (12,130).
New weekly deaths: 602, a 24% decrease from the previous week.
Highest new deaths: India (-44%), Thailand (-9%), Indonesia (+20%).

Western Pacific Region

New weekly cases: 2,149,463, a 10% decrease from the previous week.
Countries with ≥20% increase in new cases: 3 out of 25 (9%), including Vanuatu (+730%) and Micronesia (+716%).
Highest new cases: Japan (1,164,787), Republic of Korea (585,374), China (238,044).
New weekly deaths: 3,707, a 5% increase from the previous week.
Highest new deaths: Japan (+3%), Republic of Korea (similar to previous week), Australia (-13%).
