Advancing Industry Collaboration in Vehicle Software
The automotive industry is undergoing its most significant transformation in over a century, driven by “software-defined vehicles” (SDVs). To navigate this transition safely and efficiently, collaboration is essential. The World Economic Forum established the “Automotive in the Software-Driven Era” community, fostering cooperation among leaders in automotive and tech industries.
Key challenges include the complexity of developing end-to-end SDV platforms and the limited coordination among existing industry consortia (like ECLIPSE SDV, SOAFEE, COVESA, AUTOSAR). While consortia like the SDV Alliance are emerging, a unified direction is still lacking.
There is a pressing need for enhanced collaboration in defining the vehicle software platform—the “brain” of the car. A joint briefing paper suggests focusing on six broad collaboration areas: target architecture, target software stack, tools and techniques, target operating system, open composition (interfaces) and operations (security), and overall governance/coordination. Each area has different progress levels, with integration facing significant gaps.
The report proposes four key recommendations:
- Establish a common collaboration framework highlighting these six areas.
- Ensure clear leadership for each area, especially for the overarching governance area.
- Guarantee consistent industry participation, particularly from OEMs.
- Prioritize accelerating progress in the “operating environment” and “integration” areas.
Increased industry collaboration will unlock the full value potential of SDVs, enabling innovation, safety, and efficiency while navigating complex regulatory landscapes.
