Summary of UNCTAD E-commerce and Digital Economy Programme Year in Review 2024
The UNCTAD E-commerce and Digital Economy (ECDE) Programme focused on fostering an inclusive, sustainable digital future for developing countries. In 2024, it aligned with global initiatives like the Global Digital Compact (GDC), emphasizing strategies to mitigate environmental impacts of digitalization, such as shifting to a circular economy. Key activities included conducting eTrade Readiness Assessments (eT Ready) in countries like Timor-Leste and Trinidad and Tobago, developing national e-commerce strategies such as those for Fiji and Côte d'Ivoire, and supporting women digital entrepreneurs through programs like eTrade for Women, which enabled over 350 women entrepreneurs from multiple regions to scale businesses and drive digitalization.
The Programme also enhanced measurement capabilities via partnerships with organizations like IMF, OECD, and World Bank, holding capacity-building workshops that trained nearly 300 participants. Publications such as the Digital Economy Report 2024 were widely distributed, with over 37,000 downloads and media coverage from more than 300 outlets. Evaluation efforts began for a three-year period, targeting strategic recommendations for future development.
Future plans involve active implementation of the GDC, launching new eT Readies for countries including Indonesia, supporting conferences like the 2025 ECDE Ministerial Conference, and continuing collaborative efforts with partners to advance digital trade and inclusive growth amid global challenges.
