Key Determinants of Tobacco Use
The survey highlights several critical determinants that influence tobacco use among youth in Dom Feliciano:
- Access and Availability: A significant proportion of students are exposed to tobacco through their homes and social circles.
- Secondhand Smoke Exposure: High levels of SHS exposure at home and in public places suggest a need for stronger smoke-free policies.
- Cessation Awareness: While not directly measuring cessation efforts, the high percentage of students who believe smoking should be banned and who recognize the harm of SHS indicates a growing awareness.
- Media Influence: Anti-smoking messages are widely seen, which may contribute to reducing tobacco use.
- School Education: Educational efforts in schools have had a moderate impact, with a notable portion of students being exposed to information about the risks of smoking.
Conclusion
The Brazil-Dom Feliciano GYTS reveals a concerning level of tobacco use and exposure among youth. With nearly 13.2% of students currently using tobacco products, and a significant portion living in environments where smoking is prevalent, there is a clear need for targeted tobacco control interventions. The survey also underscores the importance of public health education and the role of schools in shaping students' attitudes toward tobacco use.
