Global School-based Student Health Survey Fact Sheet: Qatar 2011
This fact sheet reports data from the 2011 Qatar Global School-based Student Health Survey (Qatar GSHS) for students aged 13-15 years.
The survey assessed students in grades 7th–9th across several health domains:
- Dietary Behaviors
- Hygiene
- Mental Health
- Physical Activity
- Protective Factors (truancy, parental support)
- Tobacco Use
- Violence and Unintentional Injury
Sampling used a two-stage cluster design. The overall survey had a student response rate of 87% and 2021 participants. Results are provided for gender subgroups (Total, Boys, Girls).
Key Findings by Category (Students aged 13-15):
Dietary Behaviors
- Carbonated soft drinks: 62.5% consumed one or more per day (Total); higher among Boys (60.0%) than Girls (64.8%).
- Teeth cleaning: Only 20.0% cleaned teeth less than once daily (Total). Higher among Boys than Girls (24.9% vs 14.8%).
- Hand washing after toilet: 14.1% reported "never or rarely" (Total). Higher among Boys (18.8%) than Girls (9.1%).
Mental Health
- Close friends: 11.5% reported having no close friends (Total). Significantly higher among Boys (14.3%) than Girls (8.7%).
Physical Activity
- 60+ minutes daily: Only 15.0% met the standard (Total). Boys were more active (19.9%) than Girls (10.2%).
- Participation in PE: Boys (7.0%) had higher participation rates in sitting activities than Girls (4.3%).
- PE classes weekly: 30.4% attended school-based PE classes three or more days weekly (Total).
Protective Factors
- Missed classes: 52.4% admitted to missing class without permission (Total).
- Parent/guardian support (understanding): 26.5% felt understood by parents/guardians (Total).
- Parent/guardian support (free time): 27.0% felt parents/guardians knew their free time activities (Total).
Tobacco Use
- Cigarette smoking: 18.0% smoked one or more cigarettes during the 30 days (Total).
- Age of first cigarette: Over 93% of previous smokers started before age 14.
- Exposure to others smoking: 48.0% reported being present when others smoked on one or more days during the past seven days (Total).
Violence and Unintentional Injury
- Physical fights: 50.6% were involved in at least one physical fight in the past 12 months (Total).
- Serious injury: 51.0% experienced at least one serious injury in the past 12 months (Total).
- Bullying: 42.1% reported being bullied at least once during the past 30 days (Total).
