BACKGROUND & PROJECT

• The 2020 MSME survey revealed that smaller, informal enterprises were disproportionately affected by COVID-19, facing cash shortages, investment barriers, and employee payment difficulties.
• The project, funded by ADB (Technical Assistance Grant: $300k), focused on capacity building and equipment provision in Ulaanbaatar's ger (traditional dwelling) areas.
• Findings:
  • Challenges: MSMEs faced high rental costs, financial illiteracy, limited access to funding, outdated equipment, and low digital literacy.
  • Opportunities: High demand for training on financial management, equipment grants, and cooperative formation.

INTERVENTIONS

1. Capacity Building:

   • Trained 1,357 beneficiaries (81% women-owned) across 105 activities.
   • Beneficiaries reported improved financial literacy, increased registration rates (14% to 32%), and enhanced knowledge (ratings increased from 3.1 to 4.1).
   • 95% experienced higher revenue (avg. 57% increase) and 68% created new jobs (79% female).

2. Equipment Provision:

   • Distributed 353 pieces of equipment ($467 million equivalent), covering manufacturing, services, and trade sectors.
   • Equipment led to average 57% revenue growth, increased job creation (new hire plans reaching 130 jobs), and improved operational efficiency.
