Summary
The study aimed to expand the First WHO Repository of Platelet Transfusion-Relevant Bacterial Reference Strains by characterizing new candidate strains under routine storage conditions. Eleven bacterial strains were evaluated in a collaborative international study involving fourteen laboratories. The strains demonstrated varying growth kinetics, with some showing excellent proliferation and others limited growth. The bacterial strains that exhibited consistent growth across multiple centers were recommended for inclusion in the repository.
Key findings include:
- Eight strains showed robust growth exceeding 2 log CFU/mL within 2 days of storage.
- Other strains achieved similar growth levels by day 4 or demonstrated variability in growth.
- The study emphasized the importance of strains independent of donor factors and stable post-thawing.
The proposal also involved qualifying a second Morganella morganii strain, which showed consistent growth and stability across all eight laboratories tested. The existing WHO strains remain foundational to the repository.
