Epidemiological Situation Week 19 (7-13 May 2007): Burkina Faso reported the highest burden with 190 cases and 14 deaths (lethality rate 7.4%), where two districts (Nanoro and Sapouy) were in alert. No epidemic districts were active. Globally, total cases reached 267 with 19 deaths (lethality rate 7.1%) from multiple countries, mostly Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A (NmA).
Annual Synthesis (Weeks 1-19 2007): Burkina Faso accumulated the most cases and deaths (25,463 cases and 1,697 deaths), with 43 of 55 districts experiencing epidemics. Other high contributors included Nigeria, Mali, and the Central African Republic. High attack rates were noted in Benin, Central Africa, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire.
Pathogen Identification: NmA was the predominant pathogen, accounting for a large share of cases overall, with notable co-circulation of other serogroups like NmW135 and NmX.
Epidemiological Trends: Comparisons with 2006-2007 data showed fluctuations, with Burkina Faso and Nigeria experiencing relatively higher incidences during many weeks.
