I. Epidemiological Situation Week 19 (05-11 May 2008)

• Cases: 675 suspected meningitis cases reported across 7 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Togo).
• Deaths: 44 deaths, case fatality rate (CFR) of 6.5% overall.
• Countries with Active Outbreaks: Burkina Faso (20 districts in epidemic), Niger (2 districts in epidemic, 4 in alert).
• Key Notes: Highest CFR in Burkina Faso (11.5%), Niger (6.7%), Chad (11.5%). NmA was the predominant pathogen identified in PCR testing.

II. Synthesis of Epidemiological Situation Jan 1 - May 19, 2008 (Reported Weeks 1-19)

• Total Cases: 22,522 suspected meningitis cases across 16 countries.
• Total Deaths: 2,057, overall CFR of 9.1%.
• Outbreaks: Nigeria and Niger had the highest cases (4,433 and 2,758 respectively). Burkina Faso had the highest death count (906 deaths, 20 districts in epidemic). Togo reported a high CFR of 17.6%.
• Alert Thresholds: Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Chad, and Togo exceeded alert or epidemic thresholds.

III. Pathogen Identification via PCR Latex Culture

• NmA Dominance: NmA was the most identified pathogen (851 cases).
• Test Limitations: Fewer than 500 CSF samples were tested across all countries.

IV. Key Conclusions

• Burkina Faso was the most affected country (by cumulative cases & deaths) with high incidence in many districts.
• Meningitis remained an evolving concern in Nigeria and Niger with rising caseloads.
• Cases in certain countries (Ghana, DRC) were incomplete.
• Data collection for PCR analysis remains limited.
