Maldives 2009 GSHS Summary
The 2009 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Maldives evaluated health behaviors and risks among students in grades 8, 9, and 10, aged 13-15. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with a 100% school response rate and 80% student response rate, including 3227 participants.
Key findings by category:
- Alcohol Use: 4.9% of students drank alcohol on one or more days in the past 30 days, with boys reporting higher rates (7.3%) compared to girls (2.6%).
- Dietary Behaviours: 32.7% of students drank carbonated soft drinks one or more times per day in the past 30 days.
- Hygiene: Fewer than 8.0% of students brushed teeth daily, and 7-10% rarely washed hands after using the toilet.
- Mental Health: 17-20% considered suicide, and 7-18% had no close friends in the past 12-36 months.
- Physical Activity: Only 27-30% were physically active for 60 minutes or more on five or more days in the past week; 42% spent at least three hours sitting daily.
- Protective Factors: 21-31% missed classes without permission; 35-48% felt parents understood their worries; 45-52% had parents monitoring free time.
- Tobacco Use: 8.9% smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days, with girls at lower risk; many (57%) were exposed to smoking.
- Violence and Unintentional Injury: 30-46% were involved in physical fights, and 40-46% were seriously injured or bullied in the past year.
