Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Antigua and Barbuda (2009)
Survey Overview:
- Participants: Grade 7-9 students (Forms 1-4).
- Sample Design: Two-stage cluster sampling with 95% school and 71% student response rates.

- Violence and Unintentional Injury (physical fights, injury, bullying)
Results Summary by Category (13-15 years):

Alcohol Use
- 45% consumed alcohol on past 30 days.
- 86% ever drank alcohol, average first drink at age <14.
- 24% got drunk at least once.

- High percentage (79%) used drugs before age 14.

Hygiene
- Very low rates (2-5%) of proper dental hygiene and handwashing.
- Only 3% brushed teeth daily.

Mental Health
- High suicide ideation (17-22% considered suicide), attempted (12-16%), and lack of close friends (8-12%).
- Mental health issues significantly higher in girls than boys for some metrics.

- High screen time—over 54% exceeded three sitting hours daily.

Protective Factors
- Truancy: Many missed classes without permission.
- Parent Support: Generally strong parental understanding and knowledge of activities, but room for improvement.

Sexual Behaviours
- 37% reported ever having sex, with lower rates among girls.
- High rate (76%) for first intercourse before age 14.
- Mixed condom use rates (68%).

Tobacco Use
- About 7% smoked cigarettes on past 30 days.
- Very high initiation (<14) for those who ever smoked (89.9%).

- Over 50% in physical fights about the last year.
- Bullying common, nearly 25% experienced it in the last 30 days.
- High injury rates (51%).
