Report Summary for Global School-based Student Health Survey, Vanuatu 2011 Fact Sheet

This survey was conducted in 2011 to assess various health behaviors among students in Vanuatu who were in Years 6-9, with all analyses focusing on aged 13-15 years.

Sampling design used a two-stage cluster method with 92% school response rate and 78% student response rate overall, involving 1119 participants, representing students in the target age group.

Key areas assessed included alcohol use, dietary behaviors, drug use, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviors, tobacco use, and violence/unintentional injury.

Notable findings:
- Alcohol: 8.3% of students drank alcohol on one or more days in the past 30 days.
- Dietary behaviors: 11.4% were overweight, and 37.9% consumed carbonated soft drinks daily.
- Drug use: 3.6% reported lifetime marijuana use.
- Hygiene: Only 18.8% brushed teeth at least once daily, and 5.9% did not wash hands after using the toilet.
- Mental health: High rates of suicidal ideation (17.6%) and attempts (24.3%).
- Physical activity: Only 46.0% met minimum activity guidelines.
- Protective factors: 19.1% felt parental understanding, with 25.1% having parental oversight.
- Sexual behaviors: 12.2% reported ever having sexual intercourse.
- Tobacco use: 13.6% smoked cigarettes, with high initiation before age 14.
- Violence: 67.3% experienced bullying in the past month, and 62.2% were injured in the past year.
