Global School-based Student Health Survey in Philippines (Luzon) - 2011 Fact Sheet Summary
Survey Overview: The 2011 Philippines (Luzon) Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) assessed health behaviors in students from grades 1-4, using a two-stage cluster sampling design. A total of 1865 students participated, with a 100% school response rate and an 86% student response rate.
Key Findings for 13-15 year olds:
- Alcohol Use: 22.6% drank alcohol on ≥1 day in the last 30 days; 56.4% who ever drank had their first alcoholic drink at <14 years; 18% were really drunk at least once in their lifetime.
- Dietary Behaviours: 12.7% were underweight; 10.9% were overweight; 3.0% were obese; 46.6% drank carbonated soft drinks daily.
- Hygiene: Less than 3% (<1 time daily) brushed teeth; under 3% (never/rarely) washed hands post-toilet.
- Mental Health: 17.1% seriously considered suicide; 12.9% attempted suicide; 3.4% lacked close friends.
- Physical Activity: Only 14.2% met ≥60 mins daily activity for ≥5 days/week; 38.4% spent ≥3 hours/day in sitting activities.
- Protective Factors: 33.2% missed class/school without permission; 26.5% felt parents understood worries; 32.1% felt parents knew about free time activities.
- Tobacco Use: 13% smoked cigarettes in the last 30 days; among ever-smokers, 62.4% (just over half) first tried before age 14; 50.3% were exposed to others smoking.
- Violence & Unintentional Injury: 40% reported ≥1 physical fight; 46.9% had ≥1 serious injury; 46.1% experienced bullying ≥ once in the last 30 days.
