Overview

The 2011 Rodrigues Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) examined key health behaviors among students aged 13-15 years, using a representative sample of 1136 participants from Forms 2, 3, and 4 in Rodrigues. The survey included alcohol consumption, dietary habits, drug use, physical activity, sexual behaviors, tobacco use, and exposure to violence or unintentional injury. A two-stage cluster sampling design was implemented with a 100% school response rate and a 91% overall student response rate.

Key Findings

Alcohol Use: Approximately 26.2% of total students consumed alcohol within the past 30 days, with higher rates among boys (24.1%) compared to girls (27.9%). Among those who had alcohol, 75.1% initiated use before age 14, and 23.5% reported getting drunk at least once in their lifetime.
Dietary Behaviors: Overweight and obesity were prevalent, affecting 20.4% of total students (21.3% boys, 19.6% girls). Underweight rates were low, at 5.4%. Carbonated soft drink consumption was common, with about 29.5% drinking them one or more times daily.
Drug Use: Lifetime marijuana use was 6.2%, but first use before age 14 was less than 10% due to low sample size for boys.
Physical Activity: Only 26.3% met guidelines for daily physical activity, and 38.8% spent more than three hours daily in sedentary activities. PE classes occurred in 33.9% of cases.
Sexual Behaviors: About 30.3% of total students had sexual intercourse, with 59.3% for first time occurring before age 14. Overall, 66.8% used condoms during their last sexual encounter.
Tobacco Use: Current smoking was reported by 12.7% of total students, with higher rates among boys (15.0%). Among smokers, 78.6% tried their first cigarette before age 14.
Violence and Injury: Physical fights were reported by 34.5%, and 45.6% experienced serious injuries within the past year. Bullying victimization affected 50.0% of students.
