Summary of Consensys & YouGov Global Survey on Crypto and Web3
Report Overview
This survey, conducted from April 26th to May 18th, 2023, interviewed 15,158 respondents across 15 countries aged 18-65. It aimed to assess global perceptions of cryptocurrencies and Web3, including awareness of Web3 technology, concerns about data privacy, barriers to adoption, recent events like cryptocurrency bankruptcies, and familiarity with NFTs and the Metaverse.
Key Findings
-
Crypto Awareness: Globally, 92% of respondents are aware of cryptocurrencies, with higher understanding in Nigeria (78%), South Korea (63%), South Africa (61%), Brazil (59%), and India (56%). Web3 familiarity is low, at only 8%, indicating a disconnect between public awareness of crypto and deeper understanding of Web3.
-
Perceptions and Concerns: Respondents show strong support for data privacy, with 83% prioritizing it; 70% believe they should share profits from data usage, and 79% desire more control over online identities. Despite limited Web3 knowledge, 50% feel they add value to the internet and should be compensated, highlighting a desire for greater ownership and privacy.
-
Regional Discrepancies: Southeast Asia (e.g., Philippines, Vietnam), Africa (e.g., Nigeria, South Africa), and South America (e.g., Brazil) exhibit positive attitudes, associating crypto with the future of money and digital ownership. In contrast, Europe (e.g., Germany, France, Japan) and South Korea show skepticism, linking crypto to risks like scams, speculation, and environmental issues. Inflation-prone regions like Argentina and Nigeria view crypto as a hedge against currency instability.
-
Adoption and Investment: Higher willingness to invest in cryptocurrencies exists in Africa and Asia (e.g., Nigeria: 90%, India: 53%), while Europe and Japan show less interest. Barriers include volatility (22% overall), scams (17%), lack of education (15%), and complexity (12%). Environmental concerns are notable in the US, Japan, and Europe.
-
NFTs and Web3 Engagement: Globally, most respondents are familiar with NFTs (34%) and the Metaverse (36%), but Web3 (24%) is the least understood concept. Web3 activities like sending transactions and using wallets are common, but ownership of NFTs is higher in countries like Vietnam and India.
Conclusion
The survey underscores a significant opportunity for Web3 to address internet-related issues such as data privacy and lack of user ownership by offering decentralized solutions. However, practical understanding and utilization remain limited, necessitating better education to bridge the awareness gap and foster wider adoption.
