Chile Diabetes Analysis Summary
- Population & Income: Chile's population is approximately 18 million, belonging to a high-income group.
- Mortality: Diabetes is a leading cause of death in the 30-69 age group (35% of diabetes-related deaths) and the elderly. Higher mortality rates were observed in females between ages 30-69 and ages 70+. Deaths attributed to high blood glucose are significant.
- Prevalence & Risk Factors: The prevalence of diabetes is high, with 11.4%. Overweight (64.2%) and obesity (28.5%) are widespread risk factors, alongside low physical inactivity (21.6%).
- Health Response: Chile has an operational policy for diabetes prevention and monitoring and makes guideline-based treatment available. However, there is no national diabetes registry, and risk surveys without blood glucose measurements are not conducted.
- Healthcare Availability: Medicines such as insulin and metformin are available in primary care. Essential diagnostic technologies for diabetes management (blood glucose measurement, HbA1c, urine ketone tests) are available at the primary care level. More advanced treatments like renal replacement therapies are not widely available.
