This report provides an overview of global intellectual property (IP) activity based on 2022 data.

Global IP filings showed mixed trends in 2022:

• Patents increased by 1.7% to 3.5 million applications, with China leading.
• Utility models rose by 2.9% to 3 million.
• Trademarks declined sharply by 14.5% due to class counts reaching 15.5 million.
• Industrial designs decreased by 2.1% to 1.5 million design counts.

Active IP rights all grew:

• Patents in force increased 4.1% to approximately 17.3 million.
• Trademarks active registrations surged 9.4% to 82.5 million.
• Industrial design registrations rose 8.8% to 5.8 million.
• Geographical indications totalled around 58,400, primarily protected via national trademark systems.

Regionally, Asia dominated IP filing activity, accounting for at least 67% of patents, trademarks, and industrial designs, and nearly all utility model filings. Among top offices, China held the largest share in most categories, while EUIPO and Türkiye climbed in rankings.

Per GDP metrics highlight economic factors:

• For patents, the Republic of Korea showed the highest ratio (7,828 applications per $100 billion GDP).
• Trademarks saw strong performances in smaller economies like Australia and Chile.
• Industrial designs peaked in China and Türkiye.
