I. Epidemiological Situation Week 19 (09-15 May 2011)
- Total Cases: 415 reported, 39 deaths (9.4% case fatality rate).
- Most affected countries: Cameroon (33 cases, 2 deaths) and Chad (132 cases, 21 deaths).
- Alert status:
- Cameroon: Hina district in epidemic (AR: 12.5/100,000); Mokolo district in alert (AR: 7.2/100,000).
- Chad: 3 districts in alert: Gueledeng (AR: 7.1), Mangalmé (AR: 5.9), Oum-Hadjer (AR: 5.6).
- Leading pathogens: Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) and NmW135 dominated.
II. Epidemiological Synthesis for 2011 (Weeks 1-19)
- Overall situation: Stepped down; epidemic/alert districts reduced compared to main affected countries.
- Leading cause: NmA responsible for many cases in Cameroon and Chad.
- Notable elevated fatality rates (10%+) in Africa: Chad (4.4%), Central African Republic (12.9%), Togo (12.6%).
- High case fatality rates (5%+) in burden-bearing countries: Chad (4.4%), Central African Republic (12.9%), Togo (12.6%), Switzerland (costly).
III. Pathogens Frequency (Weeks 1-19)
- Spn and NmW135 remained the most prevalent among identified pathogens.
- Other notable pathogens included NmB, NmX, but mostly at lower rates.
- Overall, pneumococcus and meningococcus W135 dominated.
