Community colleges are expanding basic needs supports for students, addressing food, housing, and other essential needs to improve academic outcomes. Six core features characterize effective approaches:

1. Comprehensive Supports: Institutions offer a variety of supports, including food pantries, emergency aid, transportation assistance, and case management, though capacity varies for housing and child care.

2. Dedicated Staff and Partnerships: Colleges employ full-time and part-time staff with social work backgrounds, supported by student workers and external partnerships to supplement resources.

3. Broad Outreach: Colleges use diverse tactics like campus events, social media, and training for faculty/staff to raise awareness and reduce stigma.

4. Streamlined Intake and Case Management: Services are designed for accessibility, with centralized hubs, simplified eligibility criteria, and proactive follow-up to facilitate access.

5. Institutional Prioritization: Strong leadership, sustainable funding, and broad staff/faculty buy-in are essential to create a culture that values basic needs support.

6. Data-Informed Practices: Colleges increasingly use surveys and service data to understand student needs, though linking these to outcomes for program improvement is an area for enhancement.

These approaches, validated through expert consultations and interviews with 16 leading community colleges across five states, provide actionable guidance for scaling effective basic needs support.
