Recommendations: Countries are advised to monitor the co-circulation of influenza and SARS-CoV-2 viruses through integrated surveillance and report data directly to RespiMART or regional platforms. Clinicians should consider influenza in differential diagnoses for high-risk groups, testing and treating according to national and WHO guidelines.
-
Global Influenza Activity: influenza detections remained low overall, with regions showing regional variations. In Oceania, activity increased, with influenza A predominant. Southern Hemisphere temperate zones saw decreasing activity after peaks, while South Africa and temperate South America experienced declines. Global influenza subtypes were dominated by A(H1N1)pdm09, with B/Victoria lineage present in many areas. RSV activity was generally low, except in parts of Australia, tropical South America, and specific locations like American Samoa.
-
SARS-CoV-2 Surveillance: SARS-CoV-2 positivity decreased globally from sentinel surveillance, reaching around 11%, with higher rates in some regions. WHO encourages integrated surveillance, and non-sentinel surveillance reported similar trends. Activity was low across most regions, with slight increases in the Americas.
-
Data Summary: From July 6 to July 9, 2023, 107 countries reported influenza data to FluNet, with WHO GISRS labs testing over 240,286 specimens. influenza cases were lower in many northern hemisphere temperate zones, and SARS-CoV-2 cases were rising in some areas but remained below thresholds.
