STEPS Survey Summary: Vientiane Capital City, Lao PDR, 2008
The 2008 STEPS survey assessed chronic disease risk factors in adults aged 25-64 years in Vientiane Capital City, Lao PDR, conducted from January to April 2008. The study used a multi-stage cluster sampling design with 4,180 participants and a 99% response rate.
Key findings from Step 1 include:
- Smoking: Males had the highest current tobacco use (43.2%) and daily smoking rate (42.6%), with an average starting age of 19-20 years. Most smoked manufactured cigarettes.
- Alcohol consumption: Males had high abstention (84.6%) and binging rates.
- Fruit and vegetable intake: Overall consumption was low, with an average of less than 5 servings per day for 36.6-40.2%.
- Physical activity: Low activity levels were common, with only 14.2-16.7% reporting low activity.
From Step 2 physical measurements:
- Mean BMI was 23.5, with 27.4% overweight and 5.8% obese. Average waist circumference was 76.5 cm, and hypertension prevalence was 22.3%.
Combined risk factors included daily smoking, overweight, insufficient fruit/vegetable intake, hypertension, and low activity. Among adults, 21-37% had no risk factors, while 6-17% had at least three risks, varying by age group (25-44: 4-8%, 45-64: 9-17%).
Data supports population-based assessment and planning for future interventions, such as a potential 2013 repeat survey.
