报告摘要
This paper examines the role of technology in narrowing the gender gap in firm productivity by analyzing data from 11 countries. The study finds that female-managed firms face a productivity gap of 24-66 percent compared to their male counterparts. While there is little difference in the adoption of general business technologies, significant disparities exist in sector-specific business functions like agriculture and food processing. However, the productivity gap decreases as firms adopt more sophisticated technologies. The analysis highlights technology as a key mediator, with female-managed firms benefiting more from advanced technologies at higher sophistication levels.
Several factors contribute to this: women's collaborative management style, greater interaction with external sources like universities and suppliers, and the ability of digital technologies to address social barriers and time constraints. Policies should focus on promoting technology upgrading programs and addressing systemic barriers, such as financial access and information asymmetry, to support female-managed businesses.
