EU Reference Laboratories for Public Health Operational Support
1. Legal Basis & Operations
- Established under Regulation 2022/2371 by the European Commission, funded through the EU4Health program [1,2].
- ECDC supports implementation, while DG SANTE manages the designation process and key decisions.
2. Target Audience
- DG SANTE: Supports decision-making on EURL selection and implementation.
- National Focal Points (NFPs) and Operational Contact Points (OCPs): Informed of legal, scientific, and operational aspects.
3. EURL Composition & Activities
- Each EURL supports one or more disease/health issues, composed of a single lab or consortium (max participants per call).
- Activities focus on:
- Reference diagnostics, EQA, scientific advice, collaboration, outbreak response, training.
- Disease-specific mandatory tasks vary (e.g., AMR, vector-borne diseases, zoonotic pathogens).1
4. Designation & Status
- First Set (2023): 6 EURLs designated by EU Reg 2024/892, operational Jan 2025.
- Second Set (2024): 3 EURLs designated by EU Reg 2024/2959, operational Dec 2025/Jan 2026.
