The Oman Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in 2007 targeted students aged 13-15 years, with a response rate of 96.8% and involving 1,214 participants. Key findings include:
- Tobacco Use Prevalence: 15.2% of students currently use any tobacco product, with higher rates among boys (17.8%) compared to girls (11.3%). Among these, 2.3% smoke cigarettes currently, and 10.0% have ever smoked cigarettes.
- Secondhand Smoke Exposure: 13.9% of students are exposed to tobacco smoke at home, and 27.4% in public or other settings outside the home. Notably, 81.3% support banning smoking in public places, and 65.1% believe secondhand smoke is harmful.
- Media and Advertising: Students were exposed to various forms of anti-smoking and pro-cigarette messages, with 75.1% seeing anti-smoking media in the past 30 days, and 64.3% encountering pro-cigarette ads on billboards. Additionally, 12.4% have items with cigarette brand logos, and 6.7% were offered free cigarettes by tobacco companies.
- School-Based Interventions: Three-quarters of students were exposed to anti-smoking messages in school during the past year, with 66.5% taught about the dangers of smoking, and many engaged in discussions on tobacco use effects.
