The survey was conducted in 2009 among students aged 13-15 years old in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Key findings include:
-
Prevalence of tobacco use: 12.5% reported ever smoking cigarettes, with higher rates among boys. 20.0% currently used any tobacco product, and 9.1% of never smokers are likely to initiate use next year.
-
Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) and attitudes: 15.8% have parents or household members who smoke; 31.7% live in homes where others smoke; 52.6% are exposed to smoke in public or outdoor settings. Attitudes show that 80.5% believe smoking should be banned in public places, and 53.7% view secondhand smoke as harmful.
-
Media and advertising: A majority (80.5%) support smoking bans in public; 83.0% have seen anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days, but 76.1% saw pro-cigarette billboard ads; 19.3% possess objects with cigarette brand logos.

This survey highlights high youth tobacco use and strong awareness against it, but concerns about accessibility and parental smoking persist.
