U.S. – India Medicine Partnership: India’s Contribution
India plays a pivotal role in supporting the U.S. healthcare system through its pharmaceutical industry. In 2022 alone, Indian companies supplied 47% of generic prescriptions in the U.S., contributing half of all generic medicines. This supply not only enhances patient access but also provides billions in savings, totaling $219Bn in 2022 savings and $1.3Tn cumulatively since 2013.
India is crucial across five top therapy areas, including hypertension and mental health, and its generic drugs treat nearly 54 million patients, saving $130Bn annually for Medicare and Medicaid programs. However, affordability gaps and supply chain risks highlight areas for improvement, such as enhancing biosimilar production and reducing dependency on Chinese APIs.
Future opportunities involve deeper collaboration between the U.S. and India to diversify supply chains and leverage mutual strengths in manufacturing and healthcare innovation.
