Bolivia - El Alto Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary
Introduction
The Bolivia - El Alto GYTS is a school-based survey conducted in 2003, focusing on students aged 13-15 (grades 1-4 secondary and 8 primary in El Alto). It assessed tobacco use prevalence and associated determinants.
Methodology
A two-stage cluster sampling design was employed. Schools were selected proportionally to enrollment size, then classes randomly. The school response rate was 100%, class response rate 100%, and student response rate 88.6%. Total participants: 3,131 students. A survey tool was used to collect data on tobacco use, knowledge, and attitudes.
Prevalence
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 43.1% (males 50.7%, females 35.7%)
- Current tobacco use: 23.5% (males 27.4%, females 19.7%)
- Current cigarette smoking: 16.9% (males 19.7%, females 14.1%)
- Current use of other tobacco products: 11.3% (males 13.3%, females 9.4%)
- Likelihood to initiate smoking: 23.5% among never smokers.
Determinants of Tobacco Use
- High access/availability: 43.6% purchase cigarettes, not refused due to age in 64.4% of cases.
- Price not a significant barrier, as few were refused.
- Exposure: 33.8% live in homes with others smoking, 11.0% have most or all friends who smoke.
Knowledge and Attitudes
- Perceptions: 22.2% think smoking is more social for boys/girls, 56.2% believe SHS is harmful, and 77.6% support public smoking bans.
- Cessation: 74.3% of current smokers want to stop, 74.3% have tried during the past year, 76.6% received help.
- Media: High exposure to pro-tobacco ads (78.3% billboards, 72.6% newspapers/magazines); lower anti-smoking messages (14.3%).
- School discussions: 49.0% taught about smoking dangers, 22.5% discussed normative reasons, 35.3% learned tobacco effects.
Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure
- Pervasive exposure: homes, public places, and peer influence.
- SHS harmfulness believed by 56.2%, and supports bans in 77.6%. Parents smoking: 40.2% have at least one.
Media and Advertising
- Pro-tobacco ads dominate: near 80% saw billboard ads, >80% saw newspaper/magazine ads.
- Anti-smoking messages lower: ~14% saw in past 30 days.
School Curriculum
- Some educational elements: 49.0% learned dangers, discussions held for 22.5%, effects taught to 35.3%.
