Summary of "Mapping the Unpaid Care Work Economy in Asia"
This paper analyzes the unpaid care work (UCW) economy in seven Asian countries using the National Time Transfer Accounts (NTTA) and population projections. The study finds that:
- UCW is a major economic activity, with women primarily providing care work across all age groups, while men dominate market work.
- Older people, especially women, are net time givers to younger age groups, not the main demanders of care.
- Children consume significantly more UCW than adults or older people.
- Projections show no shortfall in childcare but potential shortfalls in adult eldercare. Indirect care (housework) may face a surplus.
Key policy implications include the need to recognize UCW's economic value, address gender disparities in care provision, and ensure the well-being of older women who provide much of the care for aging populations. The study advocates for better data collection to inform policies on care services and support for caregivers.
