2022/2023 Sorghum Quality Report Summary
Report Overview
This is the fourth annual report by the U.S. Grains Council, providing quality data for the U.S. sorghum crop. It analyzed 97 blended samples from 15 elevators and one farmer, focusing on grade factors, chemical composition, physical characteristics, and tannin levels. The U.S. aggregate averages are reported.

- Foreign Material (%): Averaged 0.7%, similar to 2021/2022, but below U.S. No. 1 maximum.
- Total and Heat Damage: Both averaged 0%, remaining consistent with previous years.

- All samples had tannin levels <4.0 mg CE/g (absent condensed tannins), identical to the previous three years.

Chemical Composition
- Protein: Averaged 11.0%, consistent with the three-year average.
- Starch: Averaged 72.2%, the lowest in three years.
- Oil: Averaged 4.7%, stable over the past four years.

Physical Factors
- Kernel Diameter: Averaged 2.50 mm, slightly lower than prior years.
- 1000-Kernel Weight (TKW): Averaged 24.76 g, lower than 2021/2022.
- Kernel Hardness Index: Averaged 68.8, slightly higher than prior years.
Methodology
- Samples were collected from outbound U.S. shipments and tested for grade factors (test weight, BNFM, etc.).
- Additional tests included chemical composition, physical factors, and tannin analysis.
- Results were weighted by U.S. export regions (Early and Late Harvest) to calculate aggregate averages.
